After the war, changes needed to be made :-
We first started with the Thermoplastic Track, we found them tough but brittle and produced little traction. From there we coated them in rubber but found the robot simply ripped off the rubber pads when turning on the spot and slipping the tracks due to battle, and the robot produced little speed due to the small size of the drive sporcket. - but on the up side the tracks are light.
Next came Stainless Steel tracks and larger motors. Thease tracks were alot stronger but 3 times the weight!, so each track had to be drilled, lightened and alterted to run around the drive sporckets - each track pad took about 20mins to alter and there are 35 pads per side. After this was done the weight problem was solved but we still lacked traction and speed. The team experimented with many ideas but nothing realy worked. So it was decided to use wheels.
We found some wheels from an old Ride-on
lawnmower. The wheels are about 12inchs in diameter, 5 inchs wide and covered
in chunky tread, thease wheels are conected to our new Klaxon 24v motor/gearbox
combos with a ratio of 30.1.After thease wheels were fitted and tested
we found the robot performed with about a 500% improvement in traction
and speed and lost what seemed like little in torque. It seems were on
a winner!.
A new Elecric Wheel chair control unit was bought when
we collected the motors, this has been adapted and altered to be used with
our radio gear and will prove to be much more controlable.
Due to fitting wheels, the body has under gone a whole
new design change and will be much more of a 'stelth' look. We are still
using steel panels but they will be welded into a one piece construction
that will prove to be stronger and lighter, due to the fact we no longer
need a top frame. The whole body will be painted in two-pack metalic purple!.
We will be using Thuds old saw but re-tuning it and making
stronger.
The fitting of steel spikes to the body will also happen.
A pair of 12v 24ahr aircraft gell batteries will be used and all wiring
will be protected in heatproof conduate.
